The cylinder dowel is one part that will most often be damaged or destroyed when removed
You need a special dowel puller to remove this item but being such an expensive item most people usually opt for a pair of vice grips.
The dowel serves an important function in holding the gasket in place and lining up the cases during re-assembly.
Make sure you replace a damaged one when refurbishing your engine.
